The advancements in artificial intelligence are opening a new era in our relationship with the animal world. Ambitious projects, such as those led by international research teams, are exploring the possibility of deciphering the signals emitted by animals to establish two-way communication. The stakes are high: understanding what whales, dolphins, or elephants are saying could transform our perception of their consciousness and needs.

Animals use complex communication systems, far more sophisticated than previously imagined. The songs of humpback whales, for example, exhibit statistical structures similar to those of human languages. Dolphins modify their whistles to address their young, just as humans adjust their voices when speaking to babies. Elephants communicate through intentional gestures and varied vocalizations. These recent discoveries show that animals do not merely emit sounds or movements: they exchange information, learn from their community, and adapt their messages according to context.

Artificial intelligence could accelerate the translation of these signals. Computer models are already analyzing thousands of audio recordings to identify patterns and meanings. The goal is to create tools capable of recognizing the intentions behind vocalizations or gestures, and then responding in a way that animals can understand. Such progress could help better protect endangered species, improve the welfare of captive animals, and resolve conflicts between humans and wildlife.

However, this quest raises major ethical questions. Deciphering animal communications could also expose their private lives and disrupt their societies. Animals, like humans, have expectations and social norms that must be respected. Poorly managed intrusion could disrupt fragile balances, create confusion, or even harm their survival.

Achieving communication with animals would mean recognizing their rationality and their participation in communities governed by rules. This would force us to rethink our place in the world and our responsibilities toward them. If dolphins or elephants could express their preferences, fears, or requests, how would we react? Would we be ready to listen and act accordingly?

This scientific and technological adventure is not just about curiosity. It could reveal a reality where animals are no longer mere subjects of observation, but full-fledged interlocutors, capable of sharing their experiences and expectations. The challenge will then be to assume the new moral and practical obligations that arise from this.
